eLearning for Apprenticeships & Employability Skills

We partnered with ITEC to design and deliver a suite of bespoke elearning for apprenticeships, employability skills and ESOL, supporting adult learners across Wales.

Supporting Skills Development Across Wales

This elearning programme for ITEC in Wales spans three core learning areas:

  • Health and Social Care (H&SC) Apprenticeships
  • Employability Skills Development for young people
  • English as a Second or Other Language (ESOL)

Each course was tailored to a distinct audience, but all shared a common goal: improving skills, confidence and real-world readiness through accessible, engaging digital learning.

Key features

Activity-based learning

A wide variety of interactive tasks designed to test understanding and reinforce key concepts

Character-driven scenarios

Relatable characters and real-life situations that reflect learners’ environments and experiences

Localised content

Learning designed specifically for Wales, ensuring relevance and familiarity throughout

The challenge

ITEC delivers Apprenticeships and Jobs Growth Wales Plus (JGW+) programmes through Welsh Government contracts, supporting individuals into employment and career progression. However, barriers were impacting learner success:

Health and Social Care Apprenticeships

Many apprentices demonstrated strong on-the-job skills but struggled with formal assessments due to low levels of English literacy. This led to repeated exam attempts and reduced confidence.

Employability Training

Learners entering the job market for the first time, particularly those classified as NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training), lacked access to relevant, engaging and locally contextualised learning materials. There was a clear gap in Welsh-centric content for this audience.

Why ITEC chose Day One

ITEC selected Day One Technologies for their ability to create truly bespoke learning experiences, demonstrated by previous projects and our vision for theirs.

This flexibility allowed each programme to be carefully tailored to its audience, rather than relying on generic, off-the-shelf solutions.

The eLearning Solution

Day One Technologies designed three distinct but aligned elearning programmes, each tailored to its specific audience.

By focusing on learner needs first, the team created experiences that balance accessibility with meaningful skill development.

"In each project, we focused the eLearning squarely on its intended audience, ensuring the content, tone and activities felt relevant and achievable for every learner."

Health & Social Care and ESOL

Six self-directed modules were developed to support ESOL learners undertaking their core Health and Social Care training.

Content was carefully structured to:

  • Reinforce subject knowledge
  • Build reading and comprehension skills
  • Provide confidence through repeated, low-pressure practice

Realistic scenarios and familiar workplace contexts helped learners apply knowledge in practical situations, bridging the gap between theory and assessment.

Employability Modules

For NEET learners, Day One created a highly engaging, accessible learning experience focused on real-world employability skills.

The modules were designed to feel relatable and grounded in Welsh contexts, helping learners see the direct relevance to their own lives and future careers.

Client Feedback

Feedback from ITEC and their assessors has been extremely positive, particularly around engagement, accessibility and real-world relevance.

“We were impressed with the variety of different activities to test all aspects of their literacy comprehension.”

“Our feedback is very positive. We were very impressed with the quality of the resource and the appropriateness for our learners. There were many different activities, functionality was really well explained to the learner, and we really praise the efforts of the developers in linking activities to real life situations.”

Google Maps style street simulation

“The directions following a ‘Google Maps’-style street simulation was high quality and made the activity really engaging.”

Health and Social Care & ESOL

“Working with Day One Technologies on the development of our e-learning suite for ESOL learners undertaking their Health and Social Care Core module has been an extremely positive and collaborative experience.”

“Their innovative approach, creativity, and clear understanding of learner needs ensured the content was engaging, purposeful, and accessible throughout.”

“Assessors working directly with learners have highlighted that the e-learning has significantly built learner confidence. It effectively underpins teaching and learning sessions and supports learners’ preparation for their exams.”

Employability

“Working with Day One on the development of our e-learning suite for NEET learners in Wales has been an exceptionally positive experience.”

“Their forward-thinking approach, creativity, and deep understanding of our aims meant the modules were designed with both impact and accessibility in mind.”

“We would not hesitate to work in partnership with Day One Technologies again. They have been a valued collaborator and have played a significant role in strengthening employability support for young people across Wales.”

The Impact

Delighted with the quality of the elearning for employability skills and apprenticeships, ITEC are expecting the following outcomes:

  • Improved pass rates for Health and Social Care final assessments
  • Increased learner confidence and engagement
  • Stronger employability outcomes for young people across Wales
  • A reduction in NEET figures through more effective skills development

By aligning learning design closely with real learner needs, ITEC is well positioned to deliver measurable improvements across its programmes.
