Professional training for community workers - Ygam

Ygam asked us to inject some ‘real-life’ into their training for professionals working with ‘NEET’ young people at risk of gambling harm.

Preventing Gambling Harm in 18-25 year-olds

Ygam is a charity established to prevent children and young people from experiencing gaming and gambling harms through awareness raising, education and research.

Gambling has almost become normalised in the UK with 77% of 18-25 yr olds participating in ‘in play’ betting during 2022. More at risk of gambling harms than the average young person are the 11.5% who are not in education, employment or training (NEET) and who are therefore harder to reach in the community.

The challenge

The target audience for the course ‘Preventing Gambling Harms amongst 18-25 year olds’ is any one who may deal with young people suffering from gambling harms, including social workers, case workers, therapists and medical professionals.

These are professionals who work directly with the 18-25 age group and who need to improve at spotting signs of gambling harm, have confidence to start an appropriate conversation, and be able to signpost appropriate help and resources.

Why Ygam chose Day One

They were aware of the work we’d done with Mind, UK Coaching and Tommy’s and wanted to explore how we could help bring their content to life.

Learning by Doing

We developed an engaging and attractive 30 min course from their source material, incorporating animated videos, voice narration, character-driven storylines, custom graphics, branched videos and meaningful assessments.

Learning by Doing in this course comes in the form of a branched video where the learner drives a meaningful conversation between our main protagonist, David, a NEET man in danger of gambling harm, and his support worker.

In this part of the eLearning the decisions the learner makes steer the conversation about the main character getting back into work and supporting him and his gambling. Learners get to try out different strategies in a safe environment and witness the effects of their actions and words.

Engaging visuals

We took a fully creative approach with the bespoke interface and other visual elements of the eLearning to provide the backdrop for the storytelling, scenarios and engagement that characterised this course.

Hard hitting data

Ygam's experience and deep understanding of their subject matter was brought to the fore with tailored interactions and reflective activities based on the hard facts and data that explains the depths of gambling harm on the individual and the wider community.

Interactive scenarios

To get learners thinking more deeply about the issues at stake we crafted interactive scenarios that explored possible outcomes when interacting with NEET young people potentially at risk of gambling harm.

The client verdict

“The experience from beginning to end has been excellent, and both Amy and I have really enjoyed working with Day One. You have an amazing team and we love the end result and we are sure everyone else will too! Look forward to working together potentially in the future!”
