How we created microlearning content for international transport business, Arriva. Easy to consume, bite-sized compliance courses.
Arriva is a leading international transport business headquartered in the UK, operating bus, coach, train, tram, and waterbus services across Europe. With thousands of employees across 10 countries, maintaining consistent compliance standards is essential to ensuring safety, professionalism, and trust across its diverse workforce.

to extend engagement

Traditional transport compliance training at Arriva faced the same issues many organisations encounter: content-heavy courses, low learner engagement, and little evidence of real behavioural change.
Learners were frustrated by long, text-heavy modules that felt like a box-ticking exercise rather than meaningful training. Initial completion rates were low, and there was limited impact on workplace attitudes or behaviours.
As one project lead explained:
“Other suppliers just didn’t get it. Our people were fed up with information-heavy eLearning, and we needed something that really connected.”
Arriva sought a partner who could bring creativity and innovation to compliance, making courses short, engaging, and impactful across multiple languages.
Arriva needed more than a training supplier; they needed a creative partner who could transform transport compliance training into an engaging learning experience. At Day One, our flexible, learner-centric approach and proven ability to deliver multilingual, interactive content at scale made us the right choice for this ambitious project.
We worked with Arriva to design a suite of short-form compliance courses, each lasting just 5-7 minutes.
Released throughout the year, these modules covered four key compliance topics in English, before being translated into nine additional European languages.

To keep learners engaged, we created a rich animated style featuring bespoke Arriva characters.
Each course placed these characters in varied and memorable settings – from historical re-enactments to news-desk broadcasts and detective stories – ensuring compliance training felt fresh and engaging.
Learning was extended beyond the modules through pre- and post-course assets, helping to reinforce key messages and maintain momentum across the training cycle.
We developed a distinctive animated style with plenty of interaction, making the courses enjoyable as well as effective.
The short, highly engaging modules achieved far greater buy-in from learners compared to previous compliance training. Not only did completion rates improve, but the cultural shift towards compliance as a positive and shared responsibility began to take hold.
Early days, but initial feedback from the Arriva training team is extremely positive:
“We’ve had people asking when the next one is due out!”
“I had a manager from overseas call to congratulate me on the latest module.”
The programme demonstrated that compliance training can be more than just information delivery – it can be a dynamic, interactive experience that shifts behaviour and creates lasting impact.
Whatever your learning design and content development needs, the Day One team can deliver on them with a bespoke solution.
